HMWSSB Water Electrical Substation Operations, Hyderabad, Telangana, India
Operation and maintenance of high-voltage electrical substations supporting critical water supply infrastructure under HMWSSB.Ensures reliable power for pumping, treatment, and distribution systems across Hyderabad, Telangana.

Project Information
In Telangana, the Operation & Maintenance (O&M) of electrical systems for various water supply projects under the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) plays a vital role in ensuring uninterrupted and safe water supply to millions of residents in Hyderabad and surrounding urban areas. These electrical systems form the backbone of water infrastructure, powering critical components such as intake wells, pumping stations, water treatment plants, transmission mains, service reservoirs, and distribution networks.
The scope of O&M activities includes the upkeep of high-voltage and low-voltage electrical installations such as substations, power transformers, HT and LT panels, motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), standby diesel generator sets, and associated protection and control equipment. Regular inspection, testing, and preventive maintenance of switchgear, relays, circuit breakers, cables, earthing systems, and lightning protection are essential to ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance with statutory standards.
A key responsibility under these projects is maintaining reliable power supply to large-capacity pumps that lift and distribute water over long distances and varying elevations. Any electrical failure can directly impact water availability; therefore, quick fault detection, troubleshooting, and restoration are critical. Skilled technical teams remain on standby to handle breakdowns, coordinate with power utilities, and ensure minimal downtime. Preventive maintenance schedules are strictly followed to reduce the risk of unexpected failures and extend the lifespan of equipment.
Energy efficiency and operational optimization are also major focus areas. Continuous monitoring of electrical loads, power quality, and energy consumption helps reduce losses and operating costs. Proper calibration of protection systems safeguards equipment and personnel, while modernization initiatives—such as upgrading to efficient motors and automation systems—enhance overall system performance.
Through systematic operation and maintenance of electrical systems, HMWSSB ensures dependable power support for water supply infrastructure, contributing to public health, urban development, and sustainable water management across Telangana.
